Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Review
Samsung started launching its note series with the “Samsung galaxy note 1 N7000” in October 2011. Since then every year it rolled up the updated versions. Samsung released its flagship device the “SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 9” in October 2018. The review and its complete specifications are given below:
The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 comes with a whopping 6.4 inches super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 18.5: 9 screen to body ratio. The large display with rounded corners and curved sides make it a perfect smartphone for watching movies, playing games and surfing. The resolution of the screen is 1440 x 2960 with 516 PPI(pixels per inch). But the default resolution will be 2220 x 1080 for conserving the battery life. You can change this in the settings. The screen comes with corning gorilla glass 5 protection. It comes with all the Samsung apps pre-installed like the Samsung pay, the Samsung health and few more.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is powered by the latest Exynos 9810 (10 nm) SoC. It is an octa-core processor with four cores of 2.7GHz mongoose M3 and four cores of 1.8 GHz cortex-A55. The processor differs for handsets manufactured in America and China. The Gaming processor is the latest Mali-G72 MP18 from Mediatek for high-end gaming performance. The new feature in this Samsung Note 9 is the water carbon cooling system to keep the processor cool even after high processor usage like high-end gaming and watching movies for hours. In other words, a small amount of water is present inside the phone which helps in cooling the system automatically once it exceeds a certain temperature. The operating system is the Android 8.1(oreo) and is upgradable to the latest Android 9.0(pie).
This phone is available in two storage variants: 6GB RAM with 128 GB storage and 8 GB RAM with 512 GB storage. The second sim slot can also be used as microSD slot which is expandable up to 512 GB.
The rear camera of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is a dual camera setup with 12 MP, f/1.5-2.4 variable aperture(changes according to the natural light) wide angle lens with dual pixel PDAF(phase detection autofocus) and OIS(Optical image stabilization) and 12 MP, f/2.4 telephoto lens with OIS and 2x optical zoom. We can take videos at 2160p 4k videos at 60 fps(frames per second). The Super slow motion can be taken at 960 fps which gives you an incredibly ultra slow motion video. The front facing camera is a single camera with 8 MP f/1.7 wide angle lens. We can take videos at 1440p 2k at 30 fps.
The camera app comes with special features like the scene optimizer which recognizes scenes like mountains, flowers, beaches, food, animals, etc. and adjusts the camera settings accordingly for perfect photos. The variable aperture is used to take photos in any lighting conditions. The flaw detection feature detects problems like a smudge on the lens, blurred image, closed eyes, and a pop-up message arrives immediately in the camera app. The AR emojis are also available to add stickers and characters to the pictures.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is made up of glass on both the sides with an aluminium frame surrounding the sides. It comes with a hybrid sim slot placed on the top side of the phone. The Bixby button is on the left of the phone for turning on Samsung’s own voice assistant Bixby. Samsung updated the features of Bixby to work more efficiently. However, it is not as good as Google’s voice assistant. The fingerprint sensor is placed below the rear camera unlike the Note 8’s behind the camera. It is still difficult to reach but the Face ID unlock will be helpful. The latest S-Pen is present down the phone adjacent to the speakers. Samsung hadn’t removed the headphone jack yet. The Galaxy Note 9 is IP68 water, dust and splash resistant. The stereo speakers had got some improvement.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 has a 4000 mah lithium ion battery which gives us a day and a half of normal usage. The phone does support Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 for a faster charge. It also supports Qi wireless fast charging. However, it must be purchased separately.
The S-Pen or the stylus pen is the integrated version of the old S-Pen in the note-8. It comes with Bluetooth connectivity and can work from distance up to 30 metres. It can open the camera app, take photos, switch photos in the gallery, pause videos, flip notes or we can customize the controls according to our use in the settings. By clicking the button once, we can take photos. Similarly, double-clicking it will switch from front to back camera and vice versa. It will get charged by inserting back into the phone. It can long up to 30 minutes of usage with just 40 seconds of charge. Samsung says it is more precise, responsive, sensitive and controllable with the 0.7 mm tip and 4096 pressure levels.
The infinity display, water cooled processor, optimized camera, one TB of storage, power-packed performance and the integrated S Pen, all these make this Note the ultimate Note phone made by Samsung. This phone has everything a flagship smartphone requires. It is worth all the money you pay for it. If you are not so obsessed by the S-Pen, then the other alternative may be Samsung Galaxy S9 plus having nearly same features. Otherwise, you can go for higher range iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max. At the similar price range, you can get Huawei Mate 20 pro, Google pixel 3 XL.
